Following God’s call to Zambia, Africa

Paul and Becky Finkle have been married for 21 years and have 3 children, Hannah, Grant, and Jacob. Both Paul and Becky are special education teachers. Paul taught for 12 years, while Becky taught for 10 years before staying home with their three children.  They felt called to missions for many years, specifically missions serving individuals with disabilities and their families.  In 2011, Paul and Becky partnered with an existing camp ministry and started a camp for adults with special needs.  The camp was appropriately called, Camp John 9, based on the passage in John 9 about the man born blind.  As Camp John 9 grew, Paul and Becky saw campers and camp counselors come to know the Lord and get baptized.  A few years later, they saw the need for discipleship among the disabled community.  In 2013, they started a weekly Bible study and fellowship in their home serving anywhere from 20-30 individuals with special needs and their care givers. This ministry was a family affair as their children served alongside them.

God once again challenged their family as they were introduced to a ministry serving special needs children in Zambia. In 2016, the Finkle family moved from Fenton, MI to Kabwe, Zambia.  They served two years with another organization as teachers and teacher trainers to the Zambian staff. After a few years, God began stirring their hearts once again as they came into contact with numerous individuals with disabilities who were not receiving any services, and Through the Roof was established.

Through the Roof is a registered non-profit ministry serving individuals with disabilities, their families, and other marginalized individuals in Zambia, Africa. In Mark 2:1-12, Jesus was preaching at a house in Capernaum.  A large crowd gathered to hear Jesus preach. Four men brought a paralytic man to Jesus to be healed; however, the crowd was so large that no one else could enter the house.  The four men were so determined to get their paralytic friend to Jesus that they carried him onto the roof of the house and lowered the paralytic man on his mat  through the roof down to Jesus.  Jesus not only healed the man, but also forgave his sins.

Through the Roof’s main focus is to make disciples of all people, and to bring individuals into God’s presence, just like the disabled man’s friends in Mark 2.  The vision of Through the Roof is to share the love of Christ in word and deed by providing programs and services to individuals with disabilities and their families in Katondo and the surrounding community.
